Night In The Woods Features:
- Margaret “Mae” Borowski is a 20-year-old dropout who returns to her hometown of Possum Springs, who was struck by the shutdown of coal mines and the stagnation of the economy. She meets her former friends, including the dark but intelligent Beatrice “Bea” Santello, the hyperactive anarchist disruptor Greggory “Gregg” Lee and the silent and humble friend of Gregg Angus Delaney. Mae also learns that another of her former friends, Casey Hartley, has mysteriously disappeared.
- Mae spends several days exploring Possum Springs and spending time with her friends, but she also begins to have strange and vivid dreams. At the town’s Halloween festival, Mae sees a teenage boy kidnapped by a mysterious figure. The four friends start to work together to find out what’s going on.
- Mae’s mental health slowly deteriorates with each of her dreams. After an intensive search, the four come across a strange group of characters camouflaged in the forest in their pursuit; Mae falls and falls into a coma.
- Mae finally wakes up and goes back to her friends. She reveals that the reason for her dismissal was due to her growing separation from people and the world (this implies that Mae suffers from a sort of depersonalization disorder) who sees everything as mere forms. Mae’s journal, in which she draws pictures for each important event in the game, was given to her by a doctor to write down her feelings after hitting a student with a softball bat six years ago following a dissociative episode.
- As a result of this incident, city residents became suspicious of Mae, causing financial and emotional strain on their families. As her dissociation from college deteriorated, Mae mustered the strength to go home, hoping that returning to Possum Springs would help her return to normal.
- Still injured, Mae decides to venture alone into the forest to find the group chasing her and the others, so that Gregg, Bea, and Angus refuse to let them go alone. The group enters the old mines and meets the mysterious group which turns out to be a cult. It turns out that the cult is behind the kidnapping of several residents, including Casey, who take those they think useless to the mines to sacrifice them to a divine chthonic unit called Black Goat in exchange for the Keep Possum Springs afloat.
- The cult leader allows the group to leave and threatens not to speak to anyone about the cult. However, as they climb into the mine elevator, a member of the group attempts to kill Mae. The others manage to save them and the elevator falls, the mine collapses and probably captures the underground cult.
